Our next show is called The Making of a Great Moment, it opens in just a few weeks, and it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve seen on the MRT stage.
Here’s what you should know:
1. The actors are brilliant. Their names are Danny Scheie and Aysan Celik, and this play was specifically written for them, to showcase their comedic genius.
2. It’s about a Canadian theatre troupe traveling across the United States by bicycle, which sounds ridiculous, and is a little ridiculous, especially since the “play” they perform is an epic two-person performance of the entire saga of human history. (But believe it or not, there actually is a troupe in San Francisco that does something like this!)
3. Their “play” was inspired by the book Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari, which tracks the revolutionary events that turned Homo Sapiens, a run-of-the-mill bunch of primates, into the dominant species of the planet. The creative team of The Making of a Great Moment read this book for inspiration.
4. The stage design is ingenious. The whole set is done with hand-painted, two-dimensional theatrical drops that will move in all sorts of unexpected ways:
And for costumes…
a base layer of cyclist gear, and untold possibilities for theatrical pieces to go on top.
5. The script is whip-smart as funny as hell. Playwright Peter Sinn Nachtrieb is a master of smart comedy. He writes crisp, wickedly funny banter – but also tackles huge philosophical ideas with dexterity.
In other words: Come see this play!
The Making of a Great Moment runs January 4 – December 29
