On Monday evening, May 2, some 100 appreciative spectators were treated to a dramatic reading of award-winning playwright’s Lisa Kron’s one-woman play The 2.5 Minute Ride.
The play incorporates both comedy and tragedy as they unfold in family life and in history. The three interweaving strands are the protagonist’s family’s annual trip to an amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio (highlighted by a 2.5 minute rollercoaster ride), her brother’s wedding, and a trip with her father to visit the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland. Its themes of human understanding and sympathy are very relevant in the current climate of world-wide polarization.
The performance was directed by MRT’s Director in Residence Megan Sandberg-Zakian (It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play), and saw a 90-minute solo tour-de-force by Veronika Duerr (It’s a Wonderful Life, Home of the Brave). The evening was sponsored in part by the Merrimack Valley Jewish Federation and admission was free.
