The Lowell Offering
By Andy Bayiates and Genevra Gallo-Bayiates
Directed by Jess Hutchinson

Merrimack Repertory Theatre (MRT) and the Middlesex Community College (MCC) Performing Arts Department will present a free developmental reading of The Lowell Offering by Andy Bayiates and Genevra Gallo-Bayiates at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 30, at the MRT Rehearsal Studio at 132 Warren Street in downtown Lowell.

The reading will give viewers the chance to experience the script as it exists now and follow its transformation as the writers prepare for the full staging in February 2020. In 1840 in Lowell, MA, a group of factory workers began publishing the world’s first magazine written solely by women; it was called The Lowell Offering. This is the story of the magazine’s editor, Harriet Farley, and a labor activist, Sarah Bagley – and the rise and fall of their friendship, the magazine, and Lowell’s “Mill Girl” culture.

The cast will feature Amanda Collins (Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley at MRT), Victoria Grace (Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley and Silent Sky at MRT), and Karen Oster. Oster is the chair of the Performing Arts Department at MCC; her professional credits include the Broadway/national tours of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and the Broadway production of Paul Simon’s The Capeman. MCC performing arts students will round out the cast.
